First impressions matter, especially when it comes to choosing a dream house. If you’re hoping that someone finds your property and decides it’s their dream home this spring it’s invaluable that you don’t neglect the first impression of your house, otherwise known as the curb appeal.

Landscaping for Curb Appeal

Landscaping itself is a massive undertaking, but it’s ability to give your property more curb appeal can’t be denied. There are so many options for how to improve the landscaping. If you can hire a local landscaper to come and whisk away all your curb-appeal problems you might find it well worth the money invested. But if you’re looking for a few more DIY options, these are the top things to keep in mind:

  • No dead grass
    • If your yard has “bald spots” where the grass has thinned out substantially, time to throw some seeds down. Alternatively, you could plant a bush in that space and turn a potential eyesore into a feature!
  • Refresh the mulch
    • A fresh batch of mulch in your flower-beds and around bushes and trees adds a great pop of color and makes your home look well cared for.
  • Seasonal flowers
    • Perennial flowers are a joy forever, but Tiger Lillies aren’t the most eye-catching in spring. Adding a few pops of color through some spring blooming flowers is going to make your house look like the most welcoming one of the neighborhood.
  • Clean sidewalks — remove the grass and weeds growing between the cracks
    • Sidewalk cracks are like tile grout, especially in that you don’t really notice how long it’s been since you’ve specifically cleaned it until it’s unsightly. Taking an hour to tame the grass and weeds growing in the “sidewalk grout” and be amazed by the simple transformation.

The House

You can have an absolutely gorgeous yard but still be lacking curb appeal on the house, which is the most important part. While it’s tempting to go the whole nine yards and repaint the entire house, new roof, etc. If you’re not dealing with a house that’s half painted, it’s probably a bit overkill. A few simple things can make a world of difference in giving your property more curb appeal.

  • Repair the sidings
    • If you have damaged sidings it’s worth taking a little bit of time and getting that patch replaced. Cracks in the siding scream “project” not necessarily “dream home”.
  • Power wash any crud build up
    • Having a company come in, or renting out a washer and properly power wash your exterior is both extremely satisfying to watch as well as adding so much curb appeal to your house!
  • New Welcome Mat!
    • It’s such a small thing, but can make the world of difference when it comes to the curb appeal and making people feel like they’re really coming home.
